Pollinator Monitoring Scheme - Kýpros:

Flower-Insect Timed Count

Many wild and cultivated plants depend on insects to pollinate their flowers, with successful pollination leading to successful seed or fruit production. There are concerns that numbers of pollinating insects such as bees and flies may be declining, but we need more data to be able to track changes in abundance across the country. The Flower-Insect Timed Count (FIT Count) was designed by a Research Team in the UK to collect new data on numbers of flower-visiting insects, as part of a wider set of surveys under the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS). The RIS-Ký project team have modified this to enable us to understand more about the pollinating insects in Cyprus for Pollinator Monitoring Scheme – Kýpros (PoMS-Ký).

For more information about the project please contact Jodey Peyton at info@risky.eu

Visit the Bees’ Needs webpage for information and five simple actions you can take to help pollinators.

Want to get involved?

PoMS-Ký

You don’t have to be an expert to get involved. Flower Insect Timed (FIT) counts can be carried out by anyone and is designed to be an enjoyable way to learn about pollinators while collecting data to help us assess how they doing across Cyprus. Below are a selection of resources aimed to help you carry out FIT counts and a link to where to submit your records online.

Full guidance on how to carry out a PoMS-Ký FIT count

Watch our video on how to carry out a FIT count here in English and here in Greek!

Recording form to use during the count: you’ll need to print this out and take it with you to do a FIT count

Flower guide – a guide to the flowers you can use for the count

Insect guide to recognising the insect groups you need to count

FIT count checklist – a shortened guide covering the key things to remember when doing a PoMSKý FIT count. Print one off and take it out with you when doing FIT counts so you can quickly check what things you need to record etc.,

FSC Mini-guide to pollinating insects in Cyprus (please click on "Outreach materials" and you will see guides in English and Greek)

Once you have collected your data you can enter it online.
